Triall of Bastardie: 1594
One of the best reasons to bind a book is to protect it. This beautiful little book had made it through 426 years by pure luck. I wanted to make sure that it continued to survive.
No binding and no spine. It was a miracle that it had got this far.
Books of this period had good, strong, full leather bindings. So I went with that. I felt with a book of this age and value I should give it a slip case too.
The slip case was more fiddly than I had expected. But definitely made the book feel more protected.
When I rebound the Blome History of the Bible I was left with some marbled paper which was a perfect match in colour with this book. 17th century, not 16th century, but still a very close match.
The paper is very similarly aged and matched well.
Beautifully ornate woodcut lettering.
And strange and arcane rules about who you can sleep with and who you can't.
