Bindings and Restorations

My recent binding of Nietzsche
At my Bindery I have been restoring and rebinding every kind of book for many years. I have a particular love for fine 18th and 19th century bindings in full and half leather, but I have a lot of experience in all aspects of book restoration:
- Making albums
- Bespoke leather boxes for valuable and fragile books
- Completely re-stitching books
- Cleaning stained engravings
- Making historically accurate books for cinema and TV

My set of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, from earlier this year.
My new workshop now has much more space and allows me to undertake even more complex projects. All my work is painstakingly carried out by hand using traditional methods, marbled papers, leather and genuine 22ct gold. Where possible I use original paper from the period of the book. I can take badly damaged books and restore them to their former glory. Look at some of my recent restorations to get some idea of the work I do. I shouldn't use the word "painstaking" about working with books because that suggests that there is pain involved. In fact this work is pure pleasure for me: I love to be around books and I am a voracious reader.
